What is Lassi?
Lassi is a classic blended yogurt-based drink from the Indian subcontinent. This popular drink is made by blending yogurt with water or milk, salt or sugar, and other flavorings. There are many different types of lassi.
Lassi is served cold and can be either savory or sweet. It's a refreshing and healthy drink that's the perfect thirst quencher on hot summer days.
I grew up drinking salty lassi in the summertime. My parents would make a simple cold lassi by blending yogurt with ground cumin, salt and ice.
Sweet lassi, on the other hand, is made by blending yogurt with sugar or fruit along with other flavorings like cardamom powder and rose water.
Mango lassi is one of the most popular lassi drinks and can be found on the menu of most Indian restaurants. A creamy sweet lassi is a welcome contrast to spicy curries.
However, I wanted to make a fun twist on a classic Indian lassi by making a strawberry version. The sweet, juicy strawberries are the perfect complement to the tangy, creamy yogurt in this delicious fruit lassi. This drink also has a lovely pink color that beckons you to drink it!
If you don't like strawberries, you can use type of berry like blueberries or raspberries. You can even use tropical fruit like papaya or pineapple or stone fruit like peaches, cherries or nectarines.
Doctor's Tips

Ingredients
See recipe card below for full ingredient list and amounts.
- Strawberries- you can use fresh or frozen strawberries
- Yogurt- plain whole milk yogurt is traditional and will give a creamier lassi, but you can use low-fat yogurt. You can also use Greek yogurt but it will give the lassi a tangier flavor.
- Milk- milk or water can be used to thin out the yogurt to a drinkable consistency. Milk will give the best taste and consistency.
- Sweetener- sugar is traditional but I like to use honey to sweeten my lassi; you can use any sweetener of your choice like agave syrup, monk fruit, stevia or maple syrup in place of sugar. Adjust the amount of sweetener to taste.
- Ground cardamom- this fragrant spice is a classic ingredient in lassi and complements the strawberries perfectly
How To Make Strawberry Lassi Step-By-Step
See recipe card below for full recipe instructions.
- Step 1- Wash and roughly chop the strawberries.
- Step 2- Put the strawberries, yogurt, milk, honey, and cardamom in a high speed blender.
- Step 3- Blend until smooth and frothy. Adjust sweetness to taste.
- Step 4- Pour lassi into tall glasses and serve (if your ingredients are not cold, you can refrigerate the lassi before serving).
Chef's Tips
- The amount of sweetener you need will depend on how sweet the strawberries are. Add more as needed to suit your taste.
- Use cold ingredients so that the lassi is cold. Otherwise, you can chill the drink in the fridge before serving or add a few ice cubes to the blender (but this may water it down a little bit).
- For a floral flavor, you can add a little rosewater to the lassi.
- For a decadent treat, you can top the lassi with a dollop of whipped cream.
- You can turn any leftover strawberry lassi into popsicles. Just pour it into popsicle molds and freeze until firm.
- You can make this recipe vegan by using nondairy yogurt (like coconut yogurt) and nondairy milk.

Can this be made ahead of time, or does it have to be served immediately?

Yes, you can make this ahead of time. Just give it a good stir right before you serve it in case it starts to separate a little. I hope you enjoy the recipe!
