How Long Can Chicken  (Raw or Cooked)  Sit Out?

Have you ever wondered how long chicken can sit out before you have to toss it? I'll go over everything you need to know!

Food safety is important when it comes to chicken because we want to prevent foodborne illness

Raw chicken should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 HOURS.

How long can raw chicken sit out?

Cooked chicken should also not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 HOURS.

How long can COOKED chicken sit out?

But if the temperature outside is above 90°F (LIKE WHEN YOU'RE EATING OUTSIDE)... 

Then the time limit decreases to just 1 HOUR.

THIS IS TO PREVENT THE GROWTH OF BACTERIA

Bacteria multiply rapidly when it's left out in the temperature range of 40°F (4°C) to 140°F (60°C).

THE DANGER ZONE

This temperature range of 40°F (4°C) to 140°F (60°C) is called The Danger Zone.

Food that's kept in the danger zone for too long can get contaminated and cause food poisoning.

So to keep chicken safe to eat, it's important to keep it either below 40°F (4°C) or above 140°F (60°C) at all times.
