Ingredients

  • 2 apples, washed (like Gala, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady or Granny Smith (for a more tart flavor)
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer to 300°F.
  • Slice the apples into thin slices (about ⅛-inch) thick using a mandoline slicer. If you don't have a mandoline, you can use a knife but try to keep the slices as even as possible.
  • Lay the apples on a flat surface and sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Working in batches, place some apple slices in the air fryer basket in a single layer (it's ok if they overlap a little). Place a metal rack/trivet on top of the apples to prevent them from flying around the air fryer.
  • Cook the apples 15-18 minutes, stopping to flip them halfway through. Use an oven mitt when taking the metal rack/trivet out as it will be hot.
  • Remove the apple chips from the air fryer when they are golden brown. Place them on a plate to cool for several minutes. The chips will crisp up as they cool. Repeat with the remaining apple slices.
  • Apple chips are best when eaten fresh the same day. They can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 days but will soften over time.
  • To Make Apple Chips In The Oven:
Preheat oven to 225°F. Arrange the apple slices on baking sheets lined with parchment paper or a silicone liner in a single layer and sprinkle them with cinnamon. Bake in the oven for 1 hour then flip the apples over with a spatula and cook another 1 to 1 ½ hours until they are dried out. Turn the oven off and let the apples cool in the oven for an additional hour. As they cool, they will crisp up.

Notes

  • For best results, slice the apples into uniform ⅛-inch slices with a mandoline slicer.
  • If your air fryer has a metal rack/trivet, you can put it on top of the apples to prevent them from flying around in the air fryer.
  • Watch the apple chips closely as they can go from cooked to burnt very quickly. Remove slices that are browning faster than others.
  • Apple chips won't be crispy when they first come out of the air fryer but will crisp up as they cool.
  • Apple chips are best served the same day while they're crisp however, they can be stored for 4-5 days. They will soften over time but will still be delicious.
  • The final cook time will depend on the type of apple that you use, the thickness of the slices as well as the model air fryer.  Juicier apples will take a longer time to crisp up.  Also, thicker slices will take longer to cook. This recipe was made with a Ninja Max XL 5.5 quart air fryer.
