Ingredients
Ingredient notes and substitutions. See recipe card at the end of the post for full recipe details.
- Ground beef- I use 93% lean ground beef; you can substitute ground turkey, chicken or even a veggie burger
- Vegetables- I build my bowl with Romaine lettuce, juicy tomatoes (regular or cherry tomatoes), dill pickles, and red onion; you can substitute any of your favorite burger toppings
- Sweet Potato Fries- to round out the meal, I like to include some sweet potato fries on my bowl; I use frozen fries in this recipe for convenience but you can certainly make homemade fries or try my diced potatoes.
- Cheese- I like to add a little shredded low-fat cheddar cheese to make this taste like a cheeseburger; you can use any cheese that you like on a burger
- Dried spices- I use a combination of garlic powder and onion powder to season the ground beef; you can add other seasonings like paprika or Worcestershire sauce
- Homemade burger sauce- inspired by the delicious sauce at Shake Shack, I make the sauce with a combination of mayonnaise, ketchup, yellow mustard, pickle juice, garlic powder and paprika
How To Make Burger Bowls Step-By-Step
- Step 1- Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium high heat with the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Step 2- In a small bowl or mini food processor, combine all of the sauce ingredients until smooth.
- Step 3- Cook the sweet potato fries in the air fryer or oven. Chop the Romaine lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, and pickles.
- Step 4- To assemble the bowls, divide the lettuce among 4 bowls. Add the cooked beef, chopped tomatoes, sliced red onion, pickles, sweet potato fries, and shredded cheese. Drizzle the Shake Shack Sauce over the bowls and garnish with sesame seeds, if desired. Enjoy your delicious burger bowls immediately!
Chef’s Tips
- The best part of these burger bowls is how customizable they are! Build your burger bowl with whatever your favorite burger ingredients are.
- I like to use traditional burger toppings like fresh lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, and pickles in my bowl. Some other ideas are diced avocado, bacon, caramelized onions or jalapeño peppers.
- Instead of ground beef, you can use ground turkey or chicken. To make these burger bowls vegetarian, you can use a store-bought veggies burger like Beyond Burgers or a homemade veggie burger.
- I use frozen sweet potato fries in this recipe for convenience. You can also make your own fries or diced potatoes. I'm a fan of Alexia brand sweet potato fries.
Recipe FAQs
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. For best results, reheat the burger meat and fries separately before assembling your bowl.
Absolutely! Homemade fries or diced potatoes can be a great way to add a personal touch to this dish. For convenience, I often use frozen sweet potato fries.
This dish can easily be made low carb by omitting the sweet potato fries or substituting them with lower carb vegetables like cauliflower rice or zucchini noodles.
