What are Tostadas?
Tostadas are a traditional Mexican dish consisting of a crispy, round tortilla topped with a variety of ingredients like meat, beans, cheese, and veggies. The toppings can vary depending on the region and personal preference, but the common denominator is the crispy tortilla shell.
Tostadas are kind of like crispy, open faced crispy tacos. Kids usually love tostadas because they’re like little Mexican pizzas that they can pick up and eat.
While tostadas are typically fried, to make mine healthier, I bake the tortillas instead of frying them. It's so easy- simply brush corn tortillas with olive oil and bake them in a hot oven until crispy. If you want a short cut, you can always buy tostadas from the grocery store.
Although tostadas are typically topped with refried beans, I like to top mine with avocados that I mash with cilantro, lime juice and a pinch of salt. Then, I top it all off with canned tuna that I sauté with onions, garlic, tomatoes, and spices to infuse it with tons of flavor.

Doctor's Tips
We eat a lot of seafood in my house because we love it and it has excellent nutritional benefits. Seafood is a staple of the Mediterranean diet, which is a healthy-eating plan that incorporates the traditional flavors and ingredients of the countries that border the Mediterranean Sea.
Numerous studies have shown that a Mediterranean-style diet can reduce your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
If you don’t have access to fresh seafood, no worries- you can always turn to your pantry. Canned tuna is delicious, versatile, and affordable. It's also high in protein and packed with beneficial nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Read my post about the health benefits of seafood.
Ingredients
Ingredient notes and substitutions. See recipe card below for full ingredient list.
- Canned tuna- I use sold white albacore but you can also use chunk light tuna
- Corn tortillas- I make my own tostada shells with small white corn tortillas rather than flour tortillas; this also keeps the recipe gluten free
- Dried spices- I use a combination of chili powder and cumin; you can substitute taco seasoning or use other spices like chipotles in adobo
- Avocado- I like to use creamy Hass avocados to top the tostadas
How To Make Tuna Tostadas Step-By-Step
- Step 1- Brush the tortillas with oil and bake them on a sheet pan in a hot oven until crispy.
- Step 2- Cook the tuna in a skillet with onion, garlic, tomatoes, chili powder, and cumin.
- Step 3- Mash the avocado with lime juice, cilantro, and salt.
- Step 4- Spread mashed avocado on the crispy tortillas, then top them with the tuna mixture. Add your favorite toppings like sour cream, cilantro, veggies, and lime juice.
Chef's Tips
- I like to make my own tostadas by baking corn tortillas in the oven until crispy. However, to save time, you can always buy tostada shells from the grocery store.
- Although tuna is the star of this dish, you can easily substitute other proteins like chicken, steak or shrimp. To make this dish vegetarian, you can use roasted vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, onions or corn.
- I like to top my tuna tostadas with creamy avocado because avocados are so nutritious and creamy; however, you can also used mashed black beans or refried beans (which are traditional).
Recipe FAQs
You can store leftover tuna in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Store the tostada shells separately in a sealed plastic bag or container at room temperature to keep them crispy.
