Experience a burst of Mediterranean flavor with every bite of these delectable Greek pita sandwiches. They're easy to make, customizable, and nutritious- perfect for a quick and satisfying lunch or dinner.
I love a well-crafted pita sandwich. There's just something magical about the combination of fluffy, warm pita bread, fresh vegetables, succulent meat and flavorful sauce. Quick, nutritious, and satisfying, a good pita sandwich never disappoints!
Greek Pita Sandwiches
These tasty Greek pita sandwiches are packed with color and flavor and are so easy to put together! They're made with pita bread, a type of flatbread that is soft and slightly chewy, and filled with a variety of fresh ingredients.
The best part about this tasty sandwich is that it's so easily customizable. Whether you're a vegetarian or meat lover, these pita sandwiches provide endless possibilities to suit your taste.
When I'm in the mood for a refreshing and lighter option, I turn this Greek pita recipe into a vegetarian sandwich stuffed with crunchy cucumber, crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, and salty feta cheese. When I'm craving a more substantial meal, I take it up a notch by introducing a lean protein to the pita pockets. My delicious and easy Greek chicken meatballs are a nice alternative to traditional gyro meat.
You can also add a plant-based protein to these Greek pita sandwiches like my homemade baked falafel made with chickpeas (garbanzo beans) or my mouthwatering edamame falafel.
I like to top the pita pockets off with a generous dollop of homemade tzatziki, a creamy Greek yogurt sauce that's perfect with everything from kebabs to zucchini fritters. With its blend of tangy yogurt, garlic, and herbs, tzatziki takes these Greek pita sandwiches to the next level!
However you decide to customize your Greek pita sandwich, you can't go wrong. Healthy eating has never been easier!

Ingredients
Ingredient Notes and substitutions:
- Pita- I like to use whole grain pita to incorporate some healthy whole grains. You can substitute naan, flatbread or wraps.
- Vegetables- I like to use a colorful assortment of baby spinach or mixed greens, cucumber, grape tomatoes, and red onion but you can use whatever veggies you like- the more the better! Black olives and red bell peppers would also work well.
- Tzatziki- I make a simple homemade tzatziki, which is a creamy cucumber yogurt sauce. You can also buy tzatziki at the grocery store. You could substitute hummus or use it in addition to tzatziki.
- Feta- crumbled feta cheese adds a nice salty pop of flavor.
- Protein- To add a boost of protein to this dish, you can stuff these Greek pita sandwiches with my Greek chicken meatballs, gyro meat, cooked chicken breast or rotisserie chicken. To keep this sandwich vegetarian, you can use my baked falafel or edamame falafel.
Step-By-Step Instructions
See recipe card below for full recipe instructions.
- Step 1- Prep your veggies. Wash and cut vegetables like lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, and red onion.

- Step 4- Top sandwiches with some crumbled feta cheese and tzatziki.
Chef's Tips
- My Greek chicken meatballs are perfect for stuffing into these pita sandwiches. You can also use gyro meat, cooked chicken breast or rotisserie chicken. It's a great way to use up leftover rotisserie chicken.
- You can keep this recipe vegetarian by stuffing the pita with vegetables only or you could add my baked falafel or edamame falafel. You can make this a vegan pita sandwich by leaving out the feta and tzatziki.
- You can spread some hummus in the pita bread to add extra flavor and a boost of plant-based protein.
- I like to soften my pita bread before making the sandwiches. The easiest way to do this is to cover them with a damp paper towel and microwave them on high in 15-second intervals until warmed.
- If you don't have pita, you can substitute naan, flatbread or wraps.
